This chapter introduces attributed grammars as a concise notation for describing translation processes. Attributed grammars are context-free grammars augmented with attributes and semantic action. This notation will then be used in the subsequent chapters of the book. The chapter includes examples of how to use attributed grammars for processing syntactically structured input. It also shows how they can be used in areas outside of proper compiler construction.
