In this chapter we consider the principles of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance to see how it can be exploited to generate signals from within the body related to the presence and properties of water within tissues. We explore how radiofrequency waves can be used to exploit resonance phenomenon of protons placed within a magnetic field and the various timing parameters that are associated with the relaxation of the resonant system.
