In this chapter we will consider the physical principles behind reflection imaging systems. Taking ultrasound as an example, we consider how differences in the acoustic properties of tissue give rise to reflections that can be used to identify interfaces within the body. We consider how attenuation reduces the signal we can measure and how scattering can be both helpful and problematic for imaging applications.
