The Introduction of the book Stanislavsky’s Use of Improvisation refers to An Actor’s Work and uses the students’ demonstrations at the beginning of that book to make the foundational point that improvisation does not imply doing unplanned things on stage but rather the potential, following serious preparation, for the actor to find spontaneity in performance. The four Phases around which the narrative is framed are also introduced.
