The Microstructure of Hand Movements in Fitts’ Tasks: A Dissection of Individual and Group-Level Discrepancies

This study explores the microstructure of hand movements during Fitts’ tasks, focusing on discrepancies between individual and group-level performance. We introduce Voluntary Hand Movement Adjustments Counts (V-MAC) as a novel measure to quantify the variability in the number of adjustments made by subjects in each tap. V-MAC serves as a reliable indicator of the underlying motor structure and subjects’ perception of task difficulty. Furthermore, we apply regression models to analyze its relationship with Fitts’ Law parameters. Based on both individual and group analyses, we explore a quadratic relationship between V-MAC and Fitts’ Law parameters at group level. The study uncovers a saturation point in hand adjustments, suggesting that beyond a certain difficulty, additional task complexity does not proportionally increase the need for adjustments.
