Hydro-Vegetation Dynamics in Godavari River Sub-basins: A Longitudinal NDVI and NDWI Study Using Google Earth Engine

Godavari River is one of the longest rivers in India originating at Trimbakeshwar near Nashik, Maharashtra. In the last few years, anthropogenic and natural factors have impacted the Godavari River which has caused changes in the dynamics of the river. The objective of the present study was to investigate the temporal dynamics of hydro-vegetation relationships within the Godavari River sub-basins using a longitudinal study of normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and normalized difference water index (NDWI) between years 2000 and 2022. The Google Earth Engine was used for the collection of Sentinel-2 imagery, and ArcGIS software was utilized to plot NDVI and NDWI indexes to establish the intricate connection between vegetation health and the availability of water content. The value of NDVI was calculated for nine sub-basins of the Godavari River. Observed NDVI values range from 0.36 to 0.68 in sub-basins of the Godavari River for different years which indicates the change in vegetation cover. The value of NDWI was determined year-wise for sub-basins of the Godavari River. It was observed that NDWI values range from −0.46 to −0.61 across different sub-basins over the years which indicates a diverse change in the presence of water. During analysis, it was noticed that there was an interrelationship between vegetation and water dynamics across all sub-basins of the Godavari River. This longitudinal analysis contributes to a deeper understanding of the hydro-vegetation dynamics and their interrelationship within the Godavari River basin. Understanding these dynamics is necessary for efficient ecosystem conservation and sustainable land use practices.
