Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) are a type of cell that has potential to be differentiated into any kind of somatic cells and tissues, and articular cartilage is no exception. Recent important advancements in the field include development of chondrogenic differentiation protocols and in-depth characterization of the iPSC-derived chondrogenic transplants. Safety and efficacy of the transplants have been established using animal models. While challenges persist, the technology has opened unprecedented avenues to clinical applications in articular cartilage regeneration.
