Towards Inclusive Design: A Study on Vibrotactile Feedback in Washing Machine Interfaces for Older People

With sensory capabilities naturally diminishing with age, older people potentially encounter difficulties when interacting with domestic appliances. This study aims to address these challenges by examining the relationship between the physical parameters of tactile vibration feedback on washing machine control interfaces and older people’s subjective operational perceptions. We conducted an experimental simulation replicating the real-world washing machine operations. Twelve elderly participants, aged 55 and above, engaged with a custom-designed software to evaluate the impact of different vibration parameters on their sense of certainty and comfort. The study identified optimal ranges for the three key dimensions of haptic feedback on a washing machine control panel: duration (20–100 ms), intensity (circa 5.5 m/s2), and frequency (230–280 Hz). The research provides valuable insights into the design of inclusive home appliance interfaces that better accommodate the elderly population. By optimising haptic vibration feedback, this study contributes to the development of user-friendly appliances that respect the sensory limitations of older users, thereby promoting independent living and improving quality of life.
