Slavery and its legacy are examined to show how systems built to other and assert superiority over racialized groups have evolved in step with capitalism to create systems that limit the freedoms of all. I suggest that how slavery likely arose and changed from early hunter-gatherer society conflicts to the unique atrocities that comprise chattel slavery to drive the pursuit of the accumulation of wealth, resources, and an exclusivity of freedom for the few at the cost of others. An understanding of the use of song and dance, gossip, religion, and the concept of “Black Joy” is developed to help provide an insight into ways that enslaved people and their descendants resisted and continue to resists chattel slavery and its legacy. The ways in which slavery have been maintained are also examined to demonstrate how systems built on ideas of dominance have not gone away but only changed forms along with examining how forced labor and slavery still exists in forms today around the world, all in the service of the accumulation of capital and maintaining various hierarchies based on racial, economic, gendered, and other factors. Finally, the chapter discusses ways that we all can work to ensure that freedoms are protected and respected.
