The dental health status of children with cleft palate and velopharyngeal dysfunction has been well studied, although these patients are often grouped with other patients with craniofacial anomalies. In general, the literature supports the existence of a decreased oral health state in these patients, suggesting a clear need for ongoing oral and dental care. Dental prevention measures, periodontal care, and restorative care occur as a continuum throughout life. Active orthodontic treatment, however, is administered in discrete stages of development, demarcated by non-active periods where growth and dental eruption are monitored. Orthodontic treatment is indicated to improve functional and esthetic concerns related to dento-skeletal malocclusions and as a pre-prosthetic adjunct for the replacement of missing teeth.

摘要
