The UAE has made significant strides in the field of digital transformation, as clearly reflected in its advanced rankings on global indices. In only a few years, the country has provided numerous digital services across various vital sectors, leading to massive positive leaps in all aspects of life. This has made the UAE an ideal destination for investment. As part of the digitization of essential government transactions, the use of digital applications has become mandatory for all residents, which includes the necessity of entering all personal and sensitive data on multiple applications and websites. Furthermore, the rise of e-commerce due to the ease and speed of contracting through it has made it indispensable. These rapid developments have raised concerns and questions about the safety and security of personal data that individuals are compelled to store online, given the risks of hacking, piracy, data breaches, or misuse. However, the UAE legislator has provided general legal protection for personal data under Federal Law No. 45 of 2021 in line with the pioneering approach established by the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) since its issuance in 2018. In this research, we will explore the extent to which the legal protection afforded by the legislator addresses the risks to personal data in the digital sphere, particularly in light of the rapid expansion of digital transformation in UAE.
