Recent Advances in Liquid–Liquid Extraction in Flow of Radiometals for Positron Emission Tomography

The use of medical cyclotrons for the production of positron emission tomography (PET) radiometals has increased the availability of 68Ga, 64Cu, and 89Zr. The cyclotron irradiation of solid targets followed by acid digestion and solid-phase extraction (SPE) purification has traditionally been used to isolate PET radiometals. In 2021, the European Union issued its first approval for distributing gallium-68 produced using cyclotron liquid targets. This development has opened new possibilities for purification methods based on fluidics. The long-term goal of our research program was to develop an automated production of PET radiometals by integrating fluidic and process analytical technology (PAT) into cyclotron liquid targetry. In this chapter, we summarize our efforts toward the development of an efficient system for the separation of 45Ti, 89Zr, 64Cu, and 66/67/68Ga in flow.
