Nature and Value of SEL in the Global North: Evidence from Greece, Poland, Romania, and Türkiye
摘要
Social and emotional learning skills have critical importance for a wide range of positive outcomes, including academic (e.g., academic success and school engagement), social (e.g., social adjustment and meaningful relationships), psychological (e.g., mental health and well-being), and career development (e.g., career readiness). Given the significance of SEL in future readiness and the importance of cultural context in SEL, we examined common SEL skills linked to career development from educators’ perspectives. We provided information on the nature of SEL, including approaches, policies, research, and outcomes relevant to SEL skills across different countries in the Global North, including Greece, Poland, Romania, and Türkiye. As part of a larger cross-cultural research study, we used a survey developed collaboratively to obtain data from educators (teachers, school counselors, and student trainees) and analyzed based on a grounded theory approach. The findings revealed common SEL skills that teachers and students should have and highlighted interpersonal and social awareness skills, such as relationship building, conflict resolution, empathy, and respect for diversity across countries. Country-specific themes and cross-country commonalities were discussed, taking into account the cultural contexts in which each country faces its own challenges in developing and implementing SEL programs.
