This chapter explores the nature of social and emotional learning (SEL) across the world to provide an international perspective on SEL. The chapter discusses SEL practices, challenges, and barriers from different continents, providing cultural, social, and political contexts that have influenced how SEL practices are shaped. It can be stated that there are cultural and social contexts that require similar skills across different continents, even if they are not directly called SEL skills. These skills, considered essential for living harmoniously, are addressed in education systems in response to economic, political, and cultural needs or issues the country or continent faces. Although the five-factor model suggested by the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) has been taken as a basis in many countries, each region has different aspects of conceptualizations unique to their contexts. Therefore, finding a balance between homegrown and adapted interventions for promoting culturally sensitive practices has been a challenge in many countries. Another significant issue is the need for systematic assessment and evaluation of SEL interventions and the integration of SEL into school curricula. This chapter highlights the importance of taking cultural context into consideration when designing and implementing SEL interventions.

摘要
