This contribution discusses some creative possibilities of artificial intelligence (AI) in the context of music making. It begins by separating AI applications focusing on the automation of specific musical tasks (ranging from the creation of harmonic sequences to the production of complete tracks) from co-creative explorations focusing on new possibilities such as the creation of new sounds or agents that guide an improviser to generate novel sound works. This division considers two axes framing technologies by considering their creative agency, or by observing the political, social, and ethical dimensions. We present some exemplar systems to illustrate technologies that aim to replace human abilities with computational tools and that explore co-creation possibilities where the use of musical AI can extend human capabilities. Finally, we reflect on some current explorations that open up possibilities that would have been difficult to visualize otherwise.
