This chapter addresses the rising prevalence of mental health issues among children and adolescents, emphasising the essential role non-mental health professionals play in early identification and prevention. It outlines the significant impact of both risk and protective factors on young people’s mental health and proposes a structured approach for professionals such as paramedics, police officers, teachers, and social workers to manage and mitigate these risks. This chapter aims to equip various professionals with strategies to prevent the escalation of mental health issues, ensuring a proactive contribution to the well-being and resilience of children and young people. It includes case studies and describes risk profiling and case formulation and also demonstrates ways in which to engage with young people and how to have difficult conversations.
