This chapter examines the interplay between meso-level dynamics and some of the potential drivers of radicalization and violent extremism (VE) in post-2014 Egypt. Drawing insights from the communities of Al-Warraq, Bahtim and Alexandria University students, the research examines the perspectives of youth and the relevant socioeconomic and political factors that can potentially foster VE and the extent to which macro-level policies have contributed or hindered these factors. The Al-Warraq Copic community case study highlights the pivotal role of meso-level institutions like the Church in cultivating moderate and stable youth perspectives. The community of Bahtim examines the nature of marginalized communities in the absence of meso-level institutions and in particular, the consequences of such absence for the youth within the community. The Alexandria University student case study examines the context of youth interactions within the university structure as well as their local community and the manner in which their perspectives and grievances are shaped.

摘要
