Multi-server Queueing Model with a Switchable Server to Control the Traffic Flow

The intention of this chapter is to propose a new multi-server queuing model with a switchable server. We assume that the switchable server is active when the queue length reaches the preassigned long length L for all the primary servers, and it becomes idle when the queue length becomes the preassigned small length s on all the primary servers. Also, a higher service rate is assumed for the switchable server when compared with the primary servers. We analyze this model by applying Markovian processes assuming that the interarrival and service times follow exponential distribution. Moreover, we obtain the long run behavior of the model and present numerical examples to illustrate the validity of the results obtained. We have also provided a comparison study of the waiting times of a customer before and after the implementation of switchable server.
