Increased recreational activity and participation in outdoor sports have increased the prevalence of cold weather-induced injuries, which encompass a unique spectrum of pathologies specific to the athletic population. Cold-induced injuries vary in severity based on the degree, medium, and time of cold exposure, ranging from mild hypothermia to death from shock, conduction abnormalities, or metabolic crises. This chapter discusses the growing prevalence of cold-induced injuries specific to the athletic population, with a focus on discussing epidemiological risk factors, prevalence, management, prevention, extrication, and treatment considerations for athletes in different types of cold environments.
