As outlined in Chap. 2 , offshore structures fabricated from steel have been used for producing different forms of energy for decades. Construction of the earliest steel offshore structures followed practices from civil and marine engineering based on plated or tubular assemblies connected by welded or bolted joints. For oil and gas production, fixed steel offshore structure for were the main type used. The extensive use of fixed steel offshore structures continued with structures of increasing size and complexity in ever deeper water. This chapter reviews the types and characteristics of the different steel materials that have been used for these structures over time.
