The City of Chattanooga, TN, has grown substantially during the last several decades. A recent study conducted using satellite imagery of the city acquired between 1986 and 2016 indicates that it continues to grow. The environmental impacts due to this growth have become a major concern for the progress of sustainable development within the greater Chattanooga area. As urbanization continues to increase in the greater Chattanooga area, it is very important to understand the possible urban heat island (UHI) impacts on sustainable development efforts in this area. Remote sensing technology has been used successfully to study UHI impacts for many large cities in the USA and the rest of the world. Using a pair of thermal images acquired by the Landsat 8 satellite during the summers of 2018 and 2019, this study was designed to determine if Chattanooga behaves like an urban heat island. Results suggest that the City of Chattanooga indeed behaves like an UHI and its effect is significant. It was found that the heart of the city experienced 10.66 °C higher ground surface temperature than that of the surrounding suburban and undeveloped areas during the day. Seasonal variations of UHI effects and the ground-truthing of the current satellite-based assessment are planned for future research.
