This chapter will highlight the automation concepts and technologies that are deployed for advanced NDE systems, with examples of commercial NDE systems employing ultrasonic inspection with high levels of automation and integration into their manufacturing environment. We will discuss some of the economic and technical reasons driving the adoption of automation in NDE for certain types of manufacturing, and for the integration of NDE processes within a wider digital information ecosystem—what we call NDE 4.0.
