In this qualitative study, the researcher investigates barriers to providing computer science education in rural high schools in the United States. Through in-depth interviews with educators from two rural school districts, the research reveals significant challenges in implementing and sustaining computer science programs. These challenges include resource constraints, staffing issues, curriculum alignment with state requirements, student preparation, and interest, and varying levels of administrative support. The findings of this study highlight the contrasts between a growing but sustaining program at one site and the complete absence of computer science education offerings at another. Findings underscore the vulnerability of specialized programs in rural settings where resources and student demand may be limited. The findings agree with previous studies on STEM education in rural schools and emphasize the need for specific interventions. Recommendations include developing flexible pathways for computer science integration, providing targeted funding and resources, and creating support systems for rural computer science educators. This study contributes to the understanding of rural computer science education challenges, allowing policymakers and educational leaders to address them.
