Coke oven emissions are complex mixtures, and workers are mainly exposed to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and additionally to arsenic, cadmium, and nickel from the Group 1 of the most dangerous chemical carcinogens according to the IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer). Coke production is carcinogenic to humans and causes lung cancer. Its most representative urinary metabolite is 1-hydroxypyrene.
