Chemical analyses of the soot extract identified about 20 PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons). The modern way of life, especially urbanization, favors the emergence of PAHs. Exposure to soot gives a statistically significant increase in the number of lung, esophagus, pharynx, bladder, and colon cancers. 1-Hydroxypyrene is the most representative urinary metabolite from soot.
