Pineapple (Ananas comosus) is primarily cultivated for raw fruit production and commercialization, generating large amounts of biomass that represent a constraint in the sustainable production of the crop, and whose agro-industrial market has been partially explored. The trend in the use of plant fibers as substitutes for synthetic fibers constitutes an emerging market that requires the study of aspects such as fiber yield under field conditions, determination of physicochemical characteristics and fiber quality, and the identification of potential actors in the value chain. Considering that Colombia has a germplasm bank of the genus Ananas that is part of the National Germplasm Banks System for Food and Agriculture (Spanish acronym SBGNAA), this phase of the project has been proposed, aiming to explore its morphological variability, identify accessions for their potential in obtaining leaf fiber for agro-industrial use, and estimate the cost of three options for handling harvest residues as a preliminary step to assess the economic potential of their utilization. The preliminary results constitute the baseline for identifying promising pineapple accessions with high fiber production and quality, as well as agro-industrial characteristics that allow the utilization of harvest residues. They also define the advantages for producers in utilizing pineapple leaf for vegetable fiber production, based on market requirements and multidimensional analysis (environmental, social, and economic) of its impact on the pineapple fiber production chain.
