Perspective on Coupled Agricultural Systems for a Profitable and Sustainable Production of High-Quality Food Proteins
摘要
As global protein deficiency rises due to climate change and environmental degradation, alternative protein sources present a sustainable solution to meet increasing food demands. This work gives an opinion on integrated circular bioprocessing systems that couple various protein-production methods, including microalgae, insects, fungi, and wheatgrass, to enhance resource efficiency and minimize waste. By leveraging synergies among these systems, such as using nutrient-rich effluents from microalgae to fertilize wheatgrass and repurposing by-products across cultivation methods, this approach fosters a resilient food production framework. Additionally, the economic viability of these integrated systems is addressed, emphasizing profitability through resource optimization and innovative product applications. This idea not only addresses sustainability challenges but also targets diverse market segments, contributing to global food security and promoting a circular economy in protein production. Ultimately, collaboration across industries is crucial to realize the full potential of alternative proteins in modern agriculture.
