Construction Systems Based on Wood

Load-bearing structures based on wood are, depending on the availability of wood, widespread in some parts of the world, used especially in single- and two-storey residential construction. The low volume weight of wood enables the production of elements and larger parts of structures in factories, easy handling, relatively inexpensive transport to the construction site, and quick assembly on site. The ease of dismantling and recycling of the material also allows for quicker replacement. Due to the excellent structural properties of wood in relation to its low weight, wood structures are also used for the construction of long span roofs for halls as well as high-rise buildings. Wood has relatively high compressive and tensile strength. Therefore, it is mainly used for column and skeleton bearing systems and for panel systems. Glued or nailed wood structures, either solid or trussed, are used to reduce the consumption of timber with large cross-sections while allowing the production of elements of greater lengths and larger profiles.
