Sustainable Dipterocarp Forest Land Management Assessment at Yok Don National Park, Vietnam

Evaluating economic, social, and environmental criteria holds paramount importance in ensuring sustainable land management, especially in unique ecosystems like the dry deciduous forests predominant in Southeast Asia, including Vietnam. Similar to other protected areas, Yok Don National Park (YDP) encounters challenges related to resource degradation stemming from various reasons, impacting its land management strategies. This study employed nine distinct criteria to assess the economic, social, and environmental aspects of land management within YDP. A diverse range of methodologies were utilized, encompassing social surveys, field data collection, satellite imagery analysis, statistical analysis, and spatial analysis utilizing GIS software. In addition, the significance of each criterion was determined through the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), with higher weights denoting greater importance. The findings revealed that environmental criteria held the highest importance (0.635), followed by social criteria (0.250) and economic criteria (0.115). Moreover, AHP was integrated into the Management Effectiveness Tracking Tool (METT) to evaluate land management practices in YDP. Overall, the management effectiveness was deemed sustainable, achieving a score of 7.564. Specifically, the environmental criteria garnered a notably high score of 8.056, indicating a high level of sustainability, whereas the economic and social criteria attained scores of 7 and 6.574, respectively. This study underscores the predominant importance and sustainability of environmental criteria compared to other assessment factors.
