Domestic Solid Waste Management in Rural Area: Case Study in Phuoc Long District, Bac Lieu Province, Vietnam
摘要
This study assessed the status of domestic solid waste generation, composition, sorting, and the willingness to pay for waste collection service in Phuoc Long district, Bac Lieu province, Vietnam. The domestic solid wastes were collected at 30 households in 1 week to explore waste volume, composition, and classification. In parallel, an interview was processed at 150 households to evaluate the solid waste management status and respondents’ willingness to pay for waste collection service. The results showed that the domestic solid waste generation rate was 0.37 kg/person/day with mainly portions of organic (73.8%) and recycled compounds (15.7%). The rates of solid waste collection (34.7%) and classification (19.3%) at households were still limited, causing 74.3% residents who are not involved in collection route to burn the wastes. There were 81.3% respondents willing to pay for waste collection fee, while 18.7% were not ready. Most respondents (92.0%) were satisfied with the payment of 17,336 VND which was lower than that of current payment 20,000 VND/month/household. The regression model showed that the factors of income, gender, education level, and the number of households’ member had significant influence on the household’s willingness to pay for waste collection service. The result also found that the residents did not agree to pay for solid waste collection based on the volume of generated wastes; therefore, intensive campaign to disseminate solid wastes regulations to the residents is urgently needed. The study found the opportunities for waste reduction by promoting domestic solid waste separation program at source.
