Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) Imagery Time Series Analysis for Change Detecting of Urban Development: A Case Study of Can Tho City, Vietnam

Can Tho is the most developed urban area in the Mekong Delta. It also came in second on the list of the ten cities with the highest population growth over the previous 5 years, based on a 2020 Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) report. Although the urbanization rate by the end of 2023 is 74%, developing areas in suburban such as Binh Thuy and Cai Rang districts (total area is 130 km2) are still relatively fragmented, cause difficulties to control construction permits, provide infrastructure services, and respond to natural disasters. Therefore, this study exploits synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data of the Sentinel-1 satellite to observe and track change of urban surface, multi-temporal classifying of city sprawling. Post-processed data is used to support the urban development control capacity of Can Tho city. Research results show the rapid urbanization of suburban areas of Can Tho city such as Binh Thuy and Cai Rang in the period 2019–2022 in comparison with the central area. In addition, the disruption of change corresponding to the time of the COVID-19 pandemic shows the reliability of the analysis. For further research of multitemporal analysis, Google Earth Engine offers a fascinating tool because it expedites image processing and saves time. Despite limitations in noise issues, Sentinel-1 data shows great potential not only for the agricultural sector but also for urban development management.
