Climate Change and Impacts on Coconut Pest Population, Distribution and Management Strategies

Coconut (Cocos nucifera L.) is an important plantation crop grown across tropical islands and coastlines. Factors such as global warming, frequent droughts, changing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations, weather disruptions, and other climate-related variables, however, continue to challenge coconut production and productivity. The changing climate is likely to alter insect pests’ life cycles, their growth and development, the frequent spread of invasive species, unexpected pest outbreaks, and their distribution and geographic expansion etc., Rising temperatures, shifting precipitation patterns, and extreme weather events are creating favourable conditions for pest proliferation, leading to increased economic losses and affecting food security. However, the assessment of the impact of climate change on coconut and its insect pests is highly challenging. Although much is known about coconut insect pests’ life cycle, but very little information on their adaptability to changing extreme environmental factors. To address these challenges, a paradigm shift towards climate-smart pest management is the need of the hour. The currently adopted strategies of IPM (Integrated Pest Management) also therefore need to be changed as do the changing climate scenarios. The impact of habitat suitability for the native and exotic insect pests in the current as well as in future climates needs to be assessed. There is also a need for more sophisticated, accurate, and efficient monitoring techniques for palm pests to tackle their initial level of infestation to minimize crop damage. Exploration of AI and IoT in the potential use of modern pest monitoring technologies and prediction tools needs to be developed for effective pest management strategies to improve crop production and food security. Stress-tolerant natural enemies and biomolecules that can withstand extreme temperatures would be a boon to suppress the emerging pest problem under changing climate. In this article, we have discussed in detail how the changing climate affects the population dynamics of coconut insect pests and their management strategies.
