Pests of Coconut and Its Innovative Management Strategies: Integrated Pests Management of Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle, Oryctes rhinoceros (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae)

The coconut rhinoceros beetle (Oryctes rhinoceros) is a significant pest of coconut and palm trees, causing substantial economic damage across tropical regions. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies offer a sustainable approach to controlling this pest by combining biological, cultural, mechanical, and chemical methods. Key tactics include the use of biological control agents like entomopathogenic fungi Metarhizium anisopliae and entomopathogenic virus namely Oryctes rhinoceros Nudivirus (OrNV), parasites, and predators, alongside cultural practices such as sanitation of breeding sites and regular monitoring of beetle populations, and mechanical control involves trapping and removing beetles. The implementation of IPM reduces the environmental impact of pest control, enhances crop yield, and promotes long-term pest suppression, making it an effective strategy against O. rhinoceros.
