The Red Palm Weevil (RPW), Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Olivier) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) is one of the most destructive pests of coconut palm in Indonesia and other countries in Southeast Asia. Morphological-based identification of Indonesian palm weevils, the Rhynchophorus pest, consists of 3 species, namely (1) Red Palm Weevils, Rhynchophorus ferrugineus Oliv., (2) Red Stripe Weevils, Rhynchophorus ferrugineus Oliv. var. schach F. = R. vulneratus, and (3) Rhyncophorus ferrugineus Oliv. var. papuanus Kirsch = R. bilineatus (Montr.). The RPW attack on 26 palm species has been reported, both in the young and mature stages of the plants. Severe damage would lead to the death of the infected plants. This article will give us a description of the biology, economical loss, level of damage and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) of the RPW in Indonesia. The ecological and economical justified concept of IPM is important in controlling RPW, and continual research was done by applying several control technologies with the main emphasis on the use of pheromone traps, cultural control, biological control, and eco-friendly insecticides. In the awareness of the ecological and economical sustainability, this approach is feasible for smallholder farmers to secure coconut palm yield and farmer’s livelihoods. Additionally, innovative pest management strategies suggest the potential for utilizing pests as food sources and therapeutic agents. Notably, recent research indicates that R. ferrugineus larvae could be developed as broad-spectrum antimicrobial agents, offering an alternative control strategy for this pest.
