Cities are our largest and most complex socio-spatial constructs, continuously theorized by visionary thinkers who have long pondered how we might live in the future. In the mid-twentieth century, elevated pedestrianPedestrians systems were conceived as futuristic alternatives to traditional streets. Advocates sought to reconfigure urban circulation by separating pedestriansPedestrians from inclement weather and vehicular traffic via a secondary networkNetworks. Municipal governments, planners, and real estate developers embraced this concept, constructing above-street systems that connected buildings through second-story concourses lined with retail shops. Known variously as skybridges, skywalks, catwalks, pedways, and skyways, these interventions aimed to revitalize downtowns. However, in pursuing a utopian urban vision, elevated pedestrianPedestrians systems triggered controversy, dramatically transforming downtown landscapes and diminishing street-level vibrancy. As we contemplate the future of our cities, the debate over demolishing, preserving, or repurposing aging skywalk systems underscores the complex socio-spatial dynamicsSpatial dynamics of contemporary city life. This chapter begins by exploring the historical development of the multilevel city concept from a global perspective, then narrows its focus to the current challenges faced by the Minneapolis Skyway, the most ambitious and comprehensive over-street downtown connective networkNetworks ever built.
