Fashion Streets
摘要
Fashion, here defined as clothing that is worn beyond its functionality for its aesthetic valuesAesthetic value, can be regarded as a system of communication according to Luhmann. Through its aesthetic qualities, fashion is used to define oneself and to make an impression on others. This act of communication requires one or more expressors as well as one or more impressed, with both roles often taken on simultaneously by the same person. Beyond the physical space that the garments need to exist in, fashion requires space for the occurrence of the acts of this expression, impression, as well as for its acquisition. Prior to the occurrence of online shopping and influencers, all three of these acts occurred extensively on the public street, as well as in and around more private architectural spaces, with the acquisition of fashion mostly occurring in retail spaces along public streets. With the acts of seeing and being seen in mind, we investigate the possibilities of the manipulation of those acts through spatial design. Specifically we look at case studies of design projects for the fashion industry: The fashion boutique, which displays merchandise, but as well often aims at hiding its patrons and allowing for a sense of discovery; and the fashion show, where the runway forms an abstracted street made for the acts of expressing and being impressed by fashion. By looking at five case study projects we analyze the spaces in relation to the expression of fashion and their relationship to the street, which forms fashion’s ultimate facilitator.
