Istiklal Caddesi is the heart of Istanbul’s contemporary urban cultural life, and acts as a stage for diverse local and touristic meanderings. Metaphorically likened to a lively human body, arriving to Istiklal from morning to late night, one often enters the large head of the avenue from Taksim Square, and immediately joins the torrent of people and swell of activity. Inside the hilly city, the narrow avenue’s topography gently slopes and rises, aiding or diverting the body of the crowd through the long bent artery determined to arrive at the smaller foot, Tünel Square. While the streetscape offers grand avenue vistas, the linear experience shifts along this hypercity environment, granting the individual and the collective different moments for interacting, lingering, or taking refuge. One can engage in the multiple scalesScale of public actions within the connective avenue environment of street spaces consisting of side alleys, covered passages, and small intimate courtyards. To consider Istiklal’s shifting, spatio-temporal story, the essay builds upon Istanbul’s rich centuries-long history to discuss key events that have shaped and affected public attitudes. The avenue’s transforming urban condition and atmosphere is also marked by fluctuating ideals, economies, politics, and demographies. Based on over fifteen years of fieldwork, this essay weaves together a multi-disciplinary set of secondary voices with local informants in order to describe how this particularly magnetic pedestrianPedestrians avenue continues to present a distinctive assemblage of urban choices, challenges, perceptions and experiences. Creating a unique spatial narrative captures the collisions and continuum of the avenue’s vitality.
