Advantages and Disadvantages of Distance Education and Blended Learning as a Compromise Form of Education
摘要
Information technologies have changed the life of society and the educational process. They made distance education possible. Distance education is cost-effective for universities and students and environmentally-friendly. It provides access to higher education for broad groups of the population, regardless of place of residence, level of prosperity, state of health, and employment. The student may choose any university, pace, schedule, place, time of study. Curriculums become more modern, learning – more interactive, and information becomes more diverse and visualized. However, distance education has its drawbacks. It is difficult for students to concentrate, understand the material and learn without the teacher’s supervision. They may feel social isolation, lose communication skills. Blended learning combines the advantages of in-person and distance education. Students attend classes and work remotely in a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). The National University Lviv Polytechnic uses the VLE based on the Moodle platform. At the VLE students study theoretical courses, perform tasks, solve tests and write exams.
