Different approaches are used to analyze and manage the life cycles of municipal traffic areas, in which road condition assessment plays a key role. Condition values of pavement surfaces can be assessed in Germany using a whole range of measurement methods. The methods differ not only in the depth of data collection, but also in terms of the type of spatial referencing. Area-based methods and node-edge models are used. Both models have advantages and disadvantages. Node-edge models are defined in the technical regulations and have a standardized object type library and semantics. This is not the case with area-based models. Further area-based models are more accurate in terms of damage coding, but do not allow a direction-related analyzing, which is essential for a network-wide evaluation as part of an asset management system. With the expansion of traffic infrastructure assessment to non-motorized lanes advanced methods of condition assessment have been developed, which need to be integrated in existing systems. Those include mobile mapping, for example, which was originally established for collecting as-built data; by now the provided geocoded point clouds linked to the image data of the scanned environment are municipally used to perform condition assessments. However, there is no link to the network node-edge system (NE system). Therefore, these results can neither be quality-assured with the established methods of asset management nor can they be used for condition assessment in a comparable way to that. The article uses examples to show which advantages and disadvantages are to be expected depending on the NE system or referencing to geodata and how a link can be made for using the results of road assessment in municipal approaches for asset management systems. Therefore, future requirements of Building Information Modeling, or BIM for short, are also taken into account.
