Roads connect people, enable trade and economic prosperity. Road construction as a significant part of the construction sector and contributes significantly to CO2 emissions, which gives it great potential to improve environmental sustainability. However, in addition to environmental factors that are currently gaining importance, such as changes in mobility and resource efficiency, economic factors must continue to be considered in road construction. These include, for example, costs for provision during the useful life or amortization. Furthermore, the interaction of infrastructure measures and design as a socio-cultural factor on society must not be neglected. In addition, all procurement and operational activities are linked to the state of the art, i.e. the use of modern procedures and efficient data and information systems for the structural maintenance of the infrastructure. Consideration of these four factors forms the pillars for sustainable Asset Information Management (AIM). This in turn is embedded in a federal system of policy decisions, standards, and laws. In this context, an AIM refers to a technical system that enables task-oriented management with asset information at strategic, tactical and operational levels. The aim of this paper is to identify the factors under which sustainable AIM should be operated currently and in the future. In this context, the method of Building Information Modeling (BIM) also plays an important role. On the other hand, the opportunities of AIM for the public administration as a modern, innovative and future-oriented employer are to be presented. Trends and changes in the environment of the municipal organization are evaluated in a structured process and transferred into requirements for data driven assessments. The defined requirements are transferred to the use case of the financial and maintenance management of the city of Muenster (TIMM) in accordance to an infrastructure asset management system.
