Burnt Logs as a Nature-Based Solution for Soil Protection Addressed to Forest Regeneration After Wildfire in Mediterranean Area: A Multidisciplinary Approach

The implementation of Nature-based Solution (NbS) addressed to a prompt slope stabilisation of burnt areas of the Mediterranean environment may be crucial for erosion control and forest regeneration. A plot-scale hydrological and ecological survey was conducted in the Aspromonte Massif (Southern Italy), where in summer 2021 an extreme wildfire affected (among the others) hundreds of reforested hectares of Pinus radiata. The hydrological response to several rainfall events was analysed; nine sloping plots (20%) distributed into 3 plot-blocks (forested according to the pre-fire situation, burnt with randomly directed fallen logs, burnt with fallen logs manually redirected along contour lines) were monitored for a period of 24 months. The hydrological response of bare soil is significantly mitigated by the easy manual NbS, due to the combined effects of the redirected logs (as erosion barriers) and the vegetation cover (herbaceous/shrubby species) emerging just at 3 to 5 weeks after the extreme event thanks to the stabilizing action of the naturalistic measure. The spontaneous vegetation, once gone, prepares better conditions for the triggering of forest regeneration dynamics, assured by the auto-succession of Pinus radiata.
