Analysis of the Factors Influencing the Fuel Consumption of Agricultural Tractors in Sowing Operations

Farming operations such as seeding, fertilizing, spraying, weeding, and harvesting can benefit from Precision Agriculture (PA) technologies like Global Navigation Satellite System, auto guidance, and ISOBUS implements. These technologies improve accuracy, reduce energy needs, and allow for better timeliness. While digital machines have shown rapid advantages in operations with sprayers and fertilizers, there is limited literature on seeding operations. Preliminary experimental findings for the definition of fuel consumption per hectare in the sowing did not show significant differences between different technologies. As a result, the research objective shifted to defining which factors in sowing operations needed to be considered to define fuel consumption per hectare and compare PA technologies against conventional ones. The study presents the results of field trials conducted using tractors of different power classes and levels of PA technologies, all operated by experienced drivers, with the aim of measuring fuel consumption per hectare during sowing operations and highlight the leading causes significantly enhancing the advantages of PA machines in these operations. The differences found are analyzed in detail, and the methodology of the tests using PA machines is thoroughly explained.
