Development of an Approach for Digital Diagnosis and Monitoring of Engineering Structures Using BIM As-Built Models

The Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Applied Sciences Erfurt is researching ways to incorporate measurement data and damage analyses into digital structural models, specifically BIM as-built models. This research is a part of the project UltraTimB. The primary focus is on bridge structures, which require regular inspections in accordance with German standards to ensure their structural stability, traffic safety, and durability. Typically, these inspections are conducted on-site using conventional methods. Simple inspection tools are used to identify areas of damage, which are then documented photographically and marked on paper plans. Based on these documentations, an inspection report is generated. It is important to note that the precise local description is often prone to errors. For diagnostic purposes, digital structural models should be prepared to integrate measurement data and damages directly on-site using digital tools. It is important to consider material- and component-specific properties to accurately record measurement data and damages. Precise localization is crucial. Simply expanding components with parameters is not sufficient. The objective in this context is to create diagnostic objects that represent measurements and/or damages with the corresponding relevant values on the component and accurately depict their spatial extent and location. Although the BIM methodology is mandatory for new structures, it is often impractical to create models solely for diagnosis and monitoring purposes in existing structures. The research project aims to explore and develop techniques for inventorying, capturing, and locating damages. The captured data from real structures will be overlaid with diagnostic objects from the BIM environment to meet future BIM requirements. This contribution presents the current state of development of the approach within the research project at the University of Applied Sciences Erfurt.
