A Design Thinking Approach for BIM Acceptance Based on Use Case Identification in a Manufacturer Company

Manufacturers produce a vast amount of information about their products. This information is used throughout the value chain of a project, by different players according to their own needs. Sharing this information is therefore a crucial issue, and requires processes to be put in place to ensure data interoperability. In order to propose implementable solutions based on open BIM standards to address interoperability issues, this study focuses on the acceptance of these concepts by collaborators in a manufacturer company. A literature review has been used to understand how open BIM standards work and how they are implemented among players. Then, Design Thinking methodology has permitted to develop a strategy for implementing these concepts based on the improvement of BIM acceptance. The development of this strategy is aimed at overcoming the barrier of acceptance of open BIM in order to encourage its adoption. This study provides an open BIM implementation strategy based on the real needs of collaborators, including a simplified project process representation, a use case identification workshop and a use case documentation template. This study is part of a wider proof-of-concept project demonstrating the relevance of standardizing information exchanges by using the bsDD and IDS concepts.
