Phyto-Resources of Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Their Role in Immunomodulation

Immune system is the defense system of our body that provides constant surveillance and protection against pathological conditions arising inside and outside the body. A number of parameters related to the immune system, such as synthesis of cytokines, interferons, proliferation of lymphocytes, synthesis and expression of adhesion molecules, activity of natural killer cells, phagocytosis, macrophages, etc. are largely affected by dietary lipids. This attribute is in addition to genetics, environmental factors, nutritional status, and lifestyle of the person. In addition to the effects of dietary omega-3 fatty acids as immunoregulators, inflammation as a consequence of immune activation also serves as an important mechanism where dietary omega-3 fatty acids modulate disease activity. T-lymphocyte proliferation, reduced cytokine production and suppression of autoantibody, signal transduction pathways, regulation of gene expression, production of cytokines, and eicosanoids are possible mechanisms by which n-3 fatty acids ameliorate autoimmune diseases and mediate effects on immunoregulation. To explore the potential of omega-3 fatty acids in the management of these diseases, investigations are required to establish safe and adequate doses of intake of omega-3 fatty acids to combat the autoimmune and inflammatory responses.
