This chapter explains the process of Machine Learning (ML). First, we explain the concept of ML, what makes machines able to learn, and how they are doing it by introducing the reader to the basic underlying concept and, after that, giving the terminology and an overview of the entire ML process and life cycle. Then, we introduce ML into the Active Assisted Living (AAL) concept by defining where in AAL we can leverage the state-of-the-art concepts introduced by ML to improve the AAL applications and give users additional benefits. We will explore briefly all the problems and tasks in AAL that leverage ML. At the end of this chapter, we will give an overview of some privacy and security considerations related to ML. This chapter defines ML as a general process applicable to a wide range of AAL problems.
