This introduction is divided into two sections. The first part examines the cultural and social context that shaped the British poetry scene in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. It focuses not only on female and male poets, but also on literary institutions that shaped the publication, distribution and consumption of poetry. This includes publishers who selected poems and made them available to the public; funding agencies that supported poetry; newspapers and magazines that reviewed new collections of poems. The second part of this introduction looks at the theoretical and methodological approaches chosen in this book. Finally, a summary of each chapter can be found at the end of the introduction.
