Scheduling inpatients’ surgeries is a multifaceted scheduling problem. Variety of factors such as operating rooms availability, surgeons’ or doctors’ available time, staffs working hours, number of operations in one planned period and unfavourable surgery hours can make it very challenging to obtain optimal schedule for the surgeries. Studies on inpatients’ surgeries scheduling problems are still lacking, while those solved using Nonlinear Programming model are considered more complex compared to Linear Programming model. This paper presents our study which concerns with solving operating rooms scheduling using Quadratic Programming (QP) model in which the objective function is to minimize total overtime and idle time of operating rooms to ensure full utilization of these rooms. The QP model was solved using MATLAB quadprog solver where data from a selected past study were employed. Based on the model’s optimal solution, the operating rooms’ total idle and overtime hours has been minimized to 64.01 h. Doctors’ schedule was proposed where no doctor has been scheduled to operate on more than one inpatient in the same day. The operation rooms have also been scheduled evenly with 25 inpatients’ operations for each room. Reducing total overtime and idle time enables costs savings and increases revenue to hospital and most importantly improves the quality of healthcare. More effective schedule reduces patients’ waiting time for surgeries and length of stay at hospital, optimizes the use of operating rooms, and more practical schedules for doctors. Moreover, these schedules can be achieved in a timely manner by solving the model.
