While candidates may draw on age category work as a discursive resource and in this way, do ageism, in other cases, candidates may also engage in a telling of ageism and rally this argumentatively as a reason for particular steps in their career journeys. It is this particular approach of drawing on ageism that is the focus of this chapter. In particular, we discuss two stories in which candidates present themselves as victims of ageism. These ageism stories seem to have been told in an unprepared way to tackle a difficult question which jeopardizes the candidates’ impression management and they can thus be interpreted as attempts to shift the blame for unfavorable moves in their career journey away from the candidates. Finally, we also found that these stories are hard to challenge by recruiters, as candidates cannot be held accountable for the ageism that is recounted, and thus these stories also provide an efficient way for applicants to block critical responses from recruiters and get out of interactionally challenging situations.
