We start this introductory chapter by unpacking the multifaceted nature of ageism and explaining that ageism is a widespread phenomenon, perceived and experienced by many of us, but that it is not yet sufficiently challenged in our day-to-day lives. Then we start by reviewing some of the findings from the literature relating to the main topics of this book, namely ageism in social interaction, job interviews and the interface between these two, namely ageism in relation to recruitment. First, we explore the concept of ageism and transition to a specific focus on ageism as something that is interactionally negotiated, which is the perspective we take in this book, and for which we gradually zoom in on the arena of the workplace. Second, we discuss discursive research on job interviews and touch upon how age can become relevant through the concept of impression management. Third, given the dearth of discursive research on ageism in recruitment, we widen the lens and explore findings from other research perspectives. We then bring these three sections together when we explain the aims of this study, after which a concluding paragraph closes this chapter.

摘要
